Orca

We became black shapes

dancing with the waves

for all the humans watching

for all the humans waiting

we became a display piece

a one-time show

for all the humans watching

for all the humans waiting

we lost all our freedom

forced to perform

for all the humans watching

for all the humans waiting

we all have our anxieties

of our own

for all the humans watching

for all the humans waiting

This poem is from my portfolio, Love From Anxiety, that I submitted for my Poetry Workshop module. I am quite proud of the poems I accomplished within this portfolio and hope to share more with you, when I can. This poem came from a guest poet, Suzannah Evans, who talked to us about Eco-Poetry. She showed us the poem ‘When the Whales Beached’ by Niall Campbell. It influenced me to write about anxiety, the theme of the portfolio, from another perspective like whales. After watching the incredible documentary, Black Fish, I was able to incorporate feeling and the strain of being ‘forced to perform’. The poem symbolises a sort of battle cry for the Orcas who aren’t able to be free.
